The science behind volcanoes is almost like art.  The course that lava must travel, the build-up and release of all of that energy, even the attraction that volcanoes have for storms and other natural power sources - it simply puts people at awe.

Then, there are those who are extreme.  Uber-Extreme.  These are the people who make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for attributes that baffle the sensibilities of most people.  These people aren’t necessarily weird, but they all share one common attribute.

They are extreme in some way.

Longest Hair, AKA Girl From The Ring Grown Up

Yep, it’s a creepy resemblance for anyone who has seen The Ring.  The book lists Xie Qiuping’s hair at over 18ft long.  Not sure if my depth perception is off, but either this picture was taken after she cut it a bit or she is standing on a 4ft tall chair next to an 8ft tall child and is 14ft tall herself.

Sources close to the story have confirmed that she is not 14ft tall.

According to FastFastLane, Kim Goodman of Chicago, Illinois holds the Guinness World Record for her ability to pop her eyes out — called ‘globe luxation’ — to a protrusion of .47 inches (12 millimeters) beyond her eye sockets.

It’s one of those attributes that make people scream.  Some, including Kim, call it a gift.  Others would never do it even if they could.  What if you couldn’t get them back in?

25 Digits, AKA Hannibal Lecter’s Nightmare

Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs and Count Rugen in The Princess Bride each had 6 fingers.  They were nothing compared to Devendra Harne.

According to TheLongestList oftheLongestStuff attheLongestDomainName atLongLast (yes, that’s their name - sort of ironic) Devendra has 25 digits - 12 fingers and 13 toes.  He has a condition called polydactyly.

There are two people who hold the record for having the most fingers and toes on a living person and they both carry the condition polydactyly. Pranamya Menaria has twelve fingers and thirteen toes, for a total of twenty-five. He lives in India and was born on August 10, 2005.

Devendra Harne also suffers from the same condition and also has twelve fingers and thirteen toes, also totalling twenty-five. He also lives in India and was born on January 9, 1995.

Typing will probably be very easy for him.

Longest Tongues, AKA The Next Generation of KISS

Gene Simmons is known to have a long tongue.  He knows how to use it.  If Stephen Taylor (3.74 in) and Annika Irmler (2.76 in) took their world’s longest tongues, threw on some face paint, and picked up guitars, we could introduce KISS back into the world.

One thing comes to mind when you look at these two.  Well, I’m sure more than one thing comes to mind, but for me, my first thought was…

“Wow, I wonder if they can touch their elbow with their tongue!”

Smallest Waist, Proof That Anorexia is Unnecessary

Corsets.  Some understand and appreciate their benefits.  Others see a 15″ waste (is that a size negative-5?) and think, “At least she didn’t do it by dieting.”

Neatorama gave a very straight-forward explanation three years ago of how Cathy Jung was able to achieve her unnatural figure:

Cathie Jung wore her first corset for her wedding in 1959. Now she wears it 24/7, and when it becomes loose fitting, she would wear a smaller one. The result? She now has a 15-inch waist.

If I didn’t read into this, I would have sworn that the image was the product of Photoshop, and a poor job at that.  Nope.  It’s real.

F-22 Raptor - United States

Air Superiority is the name of the game when it comes to laying the groundwork for invasion or defense.  More than any other fighter in the world, the F-22 Raptor exemplifies air superiority.

Perhaps the best example of how confident the United States Air Force is in their F-22 lies within their own website.

They state that the F-22 “is designed to project air dominance, rapidly and at great distances and defeat threats attempting to deny access to our nation’s Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps.”

“The F-22A cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter aircraft.”

Pretty bold statements.  Judging by this website and the video below, they may just be more fact than opinion:

Sukhoi SU-35 - Russia

In an attempt to keep up with American advances in aviation, Russia started work on the SU-35 in the 1980s.  It is the answer to the F-22, but just not the RIGHT answer.  While it is more advanced in combat than anything else the Russians have to offer, it still falls just shy of being a true fifth generation aircraft.

According to Sukhoi, Russia “is pinning its hopes, in the near future, on a substantially modernized Su-35 multi-role fighter.”

“They make it superior to all other 4th generation fighters now under development worldwide.”

It just isn’t good enough, which is why they are now developing a new, forward-facing wing aircraft called the SU-47.  While it will not have the stealth capabilities of the SU-35, it will be more maneuverable and can achieve stronger overall combat dominance.  The problem for the Russians is that the SU-35 is what they have right now.

“In 2009-2015, thanks to these technologies, the Su-35 will dominate the world market, outperforming other proposed multi-role fighters.”

Eurofighter Typhoon - Europe

For the British, German, Italian, Austrian, and Spanish Air Forces (plus non-European Saudi Arabia), the Eurofighter Typhoon is their baddest offering to the world of aerial combat.

Nothing can match its exceptional array of weapons as one can easily tell by the image to the right.

As the website for the aircraft states, “Nothing Comes Close”.  While it isn’t a stealth fighter in the traditional sense, stealth technology is incorporated in the basic design. Features include low frontal Radar Cross Section (RCS), passive sensors and supercruise capability.

Despite its amazing specs and “cosmopolitan” style, it has been met with a lot of opposition from the people who are paying for it - the Europeans.  In a world without a cold war, questions are being asked about how practical it is to continue to produce an aircraft with such a lofty price tag.

“Its unmatched dominance in air defence is just the beginning as the Royal Air Force have declared their multi-role Eurofighter Typhoons as ready to deploy.”

Jian-11B - China

Based upon the older Russian SU-27 fighter, the Chinese have employed stealth capabilities to give them an edge in Asia with the J-11.  While it isn’t as stealthy as its American counterpart, it still only allows 3 square meters to be visible by radar, making it virtually invisible from a distance.

Still, the technology and battle capabilities of the jet is comparable to an American F-16, making it vulnerable in combat against more advanced aircraft.  China is currently developing a pair of true stealth fighters, the Jian-13 and Jian-14.  Both are scheduled to be available by 2009

“China is interested in reducing its reliance on foreign technology for both cost reasons and a desire to improve its domestic research and design.”

While there isn’t much in the way of stealth in the world right now beyond what the United States has been able to develop, it appears that more countries are coming close to having true stealth technology.  To keep ahead of the game, the United States has many other options being developed.

In the meantime, let’s discuss the fact that this brings up a sad part of human nature.  We as a race love to watch other animals, especially powerful ones, fight each other.  Whether it’s Michael Vick and the pit bull battles, cock fights, or any of the lesser known beast vs. beast atrocities that have been popular for centuries among the “civilized” race known as human.

The fact that this one was not (necessarily) staged still brings questions of morality to mind.  Why would I have been so interested in it to click on it?  Why are you reading about it, looking at the pictures, wondering what the outcome was.  In a way, I’m ashamed at myself for reading the original article (which is definitely not the article’s fault, as it was excellent!).

Uber Ergonomics

We, as humans, can take many things to the extreme.  Here is something that is close to my heart: Uber Ergonomics.  Oh, to be able to lay in bed or in a comfortable leather recliner, feeling no pain in back or neck as I strain to put together blog post after blog post.  I consider myself an extreme blogger (in content volume, not necessarily quality) as I contribute to over 30 blogs regularly.  This piece of uber comfort would work wonders on my strained spine.

Dressing Uberly

It could be as simple as people dressing uberly with bizarre styles, activist messages, or even attire that is worn out of need.  Judging by the image here, I doubt that there is any need being met by this particular piece of clothing.

In the way that we express our fashions, we often give the world an insight into our eccentric natures.  Some people dress, pierce, or tattoo themselves in ways that are confusing to some (to say the least) but represent what it is within us that we want the world to know.

Uber Storms

It isn’t always about us.  Sometimes we forget that the world has extreme elements about it that are beyond our control.  The weather, for example, can dominate our actions and change people’s lives.

Whether it’s uber storms or uber droughts, uber heat or uber cold, we are forced to adjust on a daily basis.  Sometimes, our very existence is controlled by what is happening outside in the world.

Even animals, plants, and other aspects of God’s creation can be completely unpredictable, strange and mysterious.  If you think that a duck-billed platipus is weird, you’re only scratching the surface of uberly odd creatures.  This video that was sent to me just today shows (in a language I do not understand) just how amazing animals can be:

Still, in the end, it is the people upon which we want to focus.  The uber folks of the worlds — those who excite us, terrify us, or inspire us — they are the ones this blog is about.  It takes uber dedication to achieve some goals.  Even the most gifted are often driven by a force that compels them beyond what most would consider normal and into a state that few can achieve.  It is these people, the ones who do things uberly, that this blog is most intended to highlight.
