According to Scientific American, volcanoes are Nature’s way of letting off steam.  It’s a good thing that people aren’t so volatile.

The science behind volcanoes is almost like art.  The course that lava must travel, the build-up and release of all of that energy, even the attraction that volcanoes have for storms and other natural power sources - it simply puts people at awe.
