When you’re looking at how the MLB teams rank after 25 weeks of the season, one of the most famous Yogisms is right for the occasion.
The great Yogi Berra used to give us little quips to express how he saw things. With only a few games left, “it’s getting late early,” and some teams are likely to be left out of the fun of the postseason.
Solidly in First, We See the San Francisco Giants
The only question facing the Giants as we wind down the MLB season is whether or not they will be the NL West Division champs or they will have to play in a Wild Card game. With the Dodgers right on their heels, the Giants need to continue to win games all the way to the end of the season to be that team with home-field secured.
Second Belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers
With a 33-11 record in the last 44 games, you might have thought the Dodgers would have leapfrogged the Giants, but that hasn’t happened yet. The Giants bring a record of 97-53 through 25 weeks, and the Dodgers are only one game behind with a 96-54 record. This is easily one of the best MLB teams we’re going to see when it’s time for the postseason.
The Milwaukee Brewers Move Up to Third
This has to be the highest the Brewers have been on this list all year. The team out of the Cream City has a record of 91-59 and has secured the NL Central Division crown with ease. We will see the Brewers in the playoffs, and they just might be the toughest team in the league at that time. The Brewers have proved they were hard to beat all year.
Falling to Fourth We Find the Tampa Bay Rays
A few stumbles along the way only cost the Rays one spot in this list among the other MLB teams. The record of 93-58 has the Rays securely in the AL East lead, which is where they will remain. In fact, the Rays are likely to be the top-seeded team in the American League, which gives them the home-field advantage they want to enjoy.
We Will See the Houston Astros in the Playoffs
All year, the Houston Astros have been squarely in the lead of the AL West division. For the most part, this division is one of the worst in the MLB, and it’s been relatively easy for the Astros to remain in the lead. Their record of 89-61 has them seven games ahead of the other teams with only 12 games to go in the season.
Sixth Still Belongs to the Chicago White Sox
Another secure lead for a long time among the MLB teams has been the lead that the White Sox have had in the AL Central. They ran away with this division and should be able to rest some players before the October round of baseball begins. Will the White Sox find themselves in the World Series? Stay tuned and find out as we head into the playoffs.
The Toronto Blue Jays are in Seventh Again
Even though they hold a record that puts them behind the Red Sox, the Blue Jays are one of the stronger teams in the league right now. The record of 84-66 has them sitting in the second spot for the Wild Card game, which would be against the Red Sox right now. The race isn’t over though, and the Yankees are still nipping at their heels.
Eighth Belongs to the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have been up and down the AL East division all year but appear to be in a good position to head into the playoffs as a Wild Card team. Among the top MLB teams, the Red Sox pose some of the most challenges for other teams. Currently, this team has an 86-65 record and holds the home-field advantage for the Wild Card Game.
