What is Wordle, and Why is Everyone Obsessed With it?

If you’ve been on Twitter recently, it’s likely that you’ve come across an odd arrangement
of emojis: a 6×5 array of yellow, green, and black squares. These squares correspond with letters
on the word game Wordle, which, although it was created in October of last year, has recently
exploded in popularity. If you’re looking for something to test your brain, and are curious about
those colorful squares, take a look below to see why Wordle is all the rage.

How Do You Play Wordle?

The concept of Wordle is very simple. Once a day, players have six tries to guess a five-letter word by typing in different words and getting hints about the correct letters. If a letter in the word you guessed is not in the Wordle word at all, the square will turn black. If the letter you guessed is in the word but is not in the location that you placed it in, the square will turn yellow. And if the letter you guessed is in the word and in the correct place, the square will turn green.

By the end of the game, whether you’ve guessed the correct word or not, you will be left with a
pattern of colored squares, and that’s where the social media emojis come from. These hints will
hopefully help you to get the right word in six tries or less.

How Did Wordle Get So Popular?

Logic and word puzzles like word searches, crossword puzzles, and word scrambles have
been popular forms of entertainment for decades, so it makes sense that Wordle is popular, too. It
gives people a chance to improve their vocabulary and exercise their brains, and it’s just a fun
activity to pass some time. Plus, it’s super satisfying to finally guess the right word after doing
all the legwork of guessing and rearranging letters in their squares.

The social aspect of Wordle has also played a part in the growing obsession with the app.
One Wordle level is released every day, so each person who plays is always trying to guess the
same word. Everyone has a different thought process, so everyone’s squares will be different,
too. If you so choose to interpret it this way, it’s almost like you’re competing with your friends
and followers’ scores to see who guessed the word in the fewest tries. But even if it’s not so
much about the competition for you, it’s still fun and interesting to see everyone else’s
arrangement of squares.

How Can You Get Better at Wordle?

So now that you’re caught up to speed, here’s how to improve your Wordle skills. One of
the most important aspects of the game is choosing a good starting word. It’s crucial to get in as
many of the most commonly used letters and vowels as you can so you get more colorful clues,
and you get them for a longer time. Some good examples of starting words are “MEDIA,”
“RADIO,” “ROAST,” “STARE,” and “ADIEU.” Of course, there are many others that use a
great combination of letters to get you lots of yellow and green squares, so it’s just a matter of
finding which one strikes your fancy.

Also, make sure to make the most of all of the chances you get to guess the word. You
only get six tries, so try your hardest not to repeat any black-squared letters. Take your time
when thinking about the final words, and remember that you can use the same letter more than
once! (For example, “O” is used twice in the word “ROBOT.”) And remember, Wordle is for
fun- don’t get too frustrated if you’re struggling to guess the right word.

Wordle is a huge social media trend right now, and for good reason. It’s a fun game of
guessing words and arranging letters, and an excellent way to connect with friends online. So
hop online and start guessing!
