It’s time for our weekly review of the best teams in Major League Baseball. This is called power rankings and we are through seventeen weeks.
As we approach the dog days of summer prior to the autumn stretch to the playoffs, there are some teams that have solidified their spot while others are still trying to climb up the list.
The Giants are Riding High
While it would be easy to move the San Francisco Giants down a spot or two after losing a series to the Pirates, but they have the best record in the game at 62-37 and continue to be at the top of the NL West. Expect the Giants to be one of the best teams in the league as we come down the stretch to the end of the season and get ready for the playoffs.
Second Place Belongs to the Astros
The Houston Astros have moved up one spot from last week to take over the second position on this list. There are many who would rather not see this team doing this well, but the drama they bring can only be good for Major League Baseball. The Astros carry a record of 61-40 and look to be one of the best teams in the league at the end of the season.
The Dodgers Fall to Third
It seems odd that the Los Angeles Dodgers just might have to settle for a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, but with the Giants ahead of them in the NL West, that is becoming more of a reality every week. Even so, the 61-40 record of the Dodgers is nothing to sneeze at with a team that will likely be one of the toughest to beat in the playoffs.
We See the Rays in Fourth
Even though they don’t lead their division, the Tampa Bay Rays are fourth on the list of power rankings for this week. Their 60-40 record is respectable among Major League Baseball teams and should help to carry them to the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if the Rays find themselves on top of the AL East or if they will be sitting in one of the Wild Card spots.
The Red Sox are Fifth on this List
Even though they lead the AL East, the Boston Red Sox are fifth on this list. That may change next week, but for now, the 62-39 record lands them in this position. This team has been strong and resilient all year long and is poised to make moves toward the playoffs where they might be the representative for the American League in the World Series.
Dropping to Sixth, We See the White Sox
Last week, the Chicago White Sox were in the fourth position on this list and this week they have fallen two spots. There isn’t much to worry about for this team though, they should easily win the AL Central and be one of the teams we see when it’s time to enjoy the Fall Classic. The White Sox currently hold a 59-41 record.
The Padres have Fallen to Seventh
Even though the San Diego Padres are now in the seventh spot on this list, which is two spots lower than last week. The Padres hold a 58-44 record and are third in the NL West. We expect to see the Padres as one of the Wild Card teams when the season is over. This might mean that we have a Wild Card game that is made of entirely NL West teams.
Holding Serve in Eight We See the Brewers
Holding down the eighth spot on this list we see the Major League Baseball team that is leading the NL Central. The Milwaukee Brewers have a 58-42 record and have only grown stronger every week. This may be the team that represents this division as we prepare for the playoffs. Their next several games are against teams with bad records, which might help the Brewers pad their lead.
