Jeep Hybrids Rolling Off the Line For 2022

Currently, there are two Jeep hybrids that you can buy, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. It appears the moniker for the hybrid models from this brand will be 4xe, which gives you the idea that these models will be offered with the off-road Jeep goodness we love while also being much more efficient than their gasoline counterparts. With this movement begun, we should see more Jeep hybrids in the near future.

Not Where We Expected to See Hybrid Powertrains

Not long ago, Jeep announced there would be hybrid versions of three models in their lineup. These three were the Wrangler, Renegade, and Compass. No mention of the Grand Cherokee was made, and the plan wasn’t to put this tech in the largest model in the lineup early in the movement. Of the three models that were expected to bring the 4xe name to the brand, the Wrangler is the only one we have had in the United States.

Maybe it makes sense, maybe it doesn’t, but the European market is where the Renegade and Compass were unleashed with the 4xe name. These small hybrid models fit perfectly in that market, even though they aren’t quite as popular as the larger vehicles in the U.S. Is it possible the difference is that we love our large SUVs? That certainly has possibilities.

The Hybrid Package is a Powertrain, Not a Trim

Instead of offering the hybrid package in just one trim for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, this package is a hybrid option that can be used for a variety of trims in this SUV. You could select the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, or Summit Reserve trim and have the hybrid package you want to enjoy in the Grand Cherokee.
The powertrain that has this feature gives you a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors. The battery pack is a 400-volt, 17-kWh model, and the entire system is good for 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. Of torque. This is more powerful than some of the Hemi engines offered for the Jeep lineup. You won’t feel like you’re settling for less when you take this SUV out for a drive.

The Range You Want in a Hybrid

If you select the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4xe powertrain, you’ll have 25 miles of all-electric driving and nearly 440 miles of driving range when you have a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery pack. This is much further than you expect to go most of the time in this SUV. When you need to tow a trailer, you can hitch up a trailer that weighs up to 6,000 pounds and take it where you want to go.

The Most Capable Version of the Grand Cherokee

Don’t be afraid to take a hybrid version of the Grand Cherokee out into the wilderness. The most capable model is the Trailhawk 4xe. This model brings you the Quadra-Trac II 4WD system with a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. You’ll have excellent ground clearance with 10.9 inches between your undercarriage and the ground and can travel through water that is up to two feet high. The 47.4:1 craw ratio helps you make it slowly along the trail when the terrain gets tough.

Looking at the Wrangler 4xe

The Jeep Wrangler is the first of the Jeep SUVs to wear the hybrid badge and bring you the efficiency levels that make you smile. The 4xe package can be had in the Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude models and only with the 4-door Unlimited body style.

This version of the hybrid Jeep you want gives you 21 miles of electric-only range and makes your drive much more efficient than what you find in normal Wrangler versions. Using the same equipment as the Grand Cherokee, you’ll have up to 400 miles of total driving in this SUV. Not quite as efficient as its larger sibling, but the Wrangler with the hybrid powertrain can give you an excellent drive and is much more efficient than you find with other models.

More Hybrid Jeeps are on the Way

While Europe enjoys the smaller Jeeps with the hybrid powertrain, we have the benefits of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler models with a hybrid package in the United States. These 4xe models are just the beginning, with rumors swirling that the Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer might be next to employ this driving technology to give us hybrid driving in some of the most capable and impressive SUVs in the market.
